Sustainability: a matter of design

eco design

By this point in the 21st century, we know for sure that nothing lasts forever. Time goes by. Resources are running out. Nature is wearing away. And many movements are advocating sustainable, ecological processes in both the political and social spheres. Not only that, but also average consumers, interior designers, hotel managers and practically everyone, despite not belonging to — and often not even knowing about — any of these movements, are aware that our way of thinking and our actions can influence the future. Everyone has their own level of responsibility and everyone can contribute in a larger or smaller way, but every single one of us has something to do and to say about this.

And "eco-friendly" is no longer simply limited to using recyclable materials whenever possible or designing efficient products (although these are still important aspects). It has become a much more global mind-set, a way of life. Every process, every material, every consumption and — I would even dare to say — every thought has to be sustainable and, as I said before, ecological. Does this seem impossible? Because it isn’t. It is clear that the mere fact of living in this highly technical and developed social system has an environmental impact. However, there are many different ways to do things. And this is the heart of the matter: finding the most appropriate and least aggressive way. This is why design is so important for sustainability. And it’s not only about product design, but also about the design of the whole process.
