Nahtrang Studio, 14 years designing solutions

Photographer: Jordi Casanova | www.icosmic.com

Nahtrang is born in 2004 as a result of the passion of two young people from Barcelona in love with art and design. The illusion of a new project and the inquisitiveness with regard to things well done leads them to working for national and international firms of renown within a very few years. Their work stands out due to its visual elegance and its functionality, but what really characterizes this design studio is the harmony between ethics and esthetics of their pieces. With elaborate work, Nahtrang arrives at the maximum point of simplicity without ever forgetting the sustainability, trying to minimize the productive processes and to optimize the resources. All of these characteristics combined have converted Ester Pujol and Daniel Vila into two designers who have achieved making their vocation their way of life.

The design is for you… an idealistic vision of how, through this, we can improve our surroundings.

How did you discover that the industrial design was your vocation?

Daniel Vila: my family had a restaurant in a very small village and many people with different types of inquisitiveness passed through it. This often gave way to meetings and dialogs. Little by little I saw that the things they talked about created curiosity within me. The summers were long and my parents worked. One summer they left me with some friends who had an industrial design studio. They took me to meetings with them. I was in the office playing and, since it was summer, many times water battles were organized on the rooftop of the studio...I wanted to be part of all of this!

Ester Pujol: my vocation first passed through architecture, but when I was 16 I discovered that it was industrial design thanks to a teacher who taught technical drawing. My father is a graphic designer. He didn’t want me to dedicate myself to this, but upon having to choose my studies someone told me about the Massana School. As soon as I walked through the patio, I fell in love with the place.

Which ones are your major sources of inspiration?

We have grown up being surrounded unconsciously by design and it is possible that this be the first source of direct inspiration. Works of art from Miguel Milà, André Ricard, Coderch, Tusquets or Torres Clavé have formed part of our lives. The relationship between art and design is also fundamental, but an important part has been the trips, discovering other cultures and finding out how to solve daily problems with very elemental solutions.

How did your collaboration find place?

After having studied together, we decided to create our own products. First we did this for relatives and afterwards we tried to sell them.

It was an unforgettable stage of our life and we considered it as a game. We made pieces that we sold to stores and museums. All of this started to take shape and there was a time point when we started getting orders and then we decided to found the studio.

Where does the name Nahtrang come from?

Nahtrang comes from a city in Vietnam. At the time we founded the studio we had to find a name. We found the name Pujol&Vila boring. It seemed more like the name of a lawyer’s office than a design studio. He (Daniel Vila) told us that he had just returned from a trip to Vietnam and that he was delighted. We chose the name Nahtrang due to its novelty and to what it transmitted. After some time we saw that a naming agency would never hire us since the name cannot be pronounced, but it is now part of our DNA.

During the 14 years that you have been with Nahtrang, what big differences have you observed in yourselves?

We are very different, but with very similar values. One is more prudent and the other one is more impulsive and direct. I think this is the reason that the daily gears work. The beginnings are never easy, but with perspectives and looking back, we feel very fortunate to be working in something that we are passionate about.

How did you get to know Estiluz?

We have known Estiluz for many years and we had a very good relationship, but the necessity for a mutual cooperation had never come up. Four years ago they knocked on our door with a very clear briefing: we want a big lamp for big spaces. Our answer was: we will make a small piece that will fill big spaces for you. And this is when VOLTA was born!

In 2016 you achieved Volta getting to be a finalist in the Delta competition How do you evaluate the new nomination of Revolta?

The Delta awards are very special for us. We got to know them when we were students and we always went to the parties and the expositions. The Delta competition represents the state of the industry in our country and it is an honor to be able to form part of it.

Revolta is Volta’s young sister. As a matter of fact, before presenting Volta at the Light + Building in Frankfurt, we decided to give some time to Volta and the following year Revolta appeared. With a minimalistic and sculptural concept Revolta adds the possibility of incorporating a personalized acoustic lighting fixture.

What new projects are you preparing?

With Estiluz we almost have a family of different parts of these last projects ready, but which continue being in harmony. It is an extensive family, which we hope will conquer terraces, as well as the indoors of houses, hotels and restaurants within the following months.
