Avoiding pollution in compact fluorescent bulbs

bombilla fluorescente bajo consumo energy saving lamp

The use of compact fluorescent bulbs is quite common in different indoor and outdoor lighting products. However, even though we are all aware that recycling them is important because they contain pollutant materials - mercury sealed within the glass tube- we often do not know exactly how to handle a broken lamp. For this reason, in this post we will give some basic tips from the EPA web (United States Enviromental Protection Agency). They are very easy to follow and will help us prevent being affected by this harmful metal.

How to avoid breakage of a fluorescent bulb?

• Do not use this type of light bulbs in unstable lights, likely to fall down.
• Do not touch the bulbs if they are on or still warm.
• Manipulate the bulb carefully, holding  the plastic or ceramic base if possible and avoiding touching the glass tube.

If the lamp breaks, how should I act?
• Open all doors and windows for ventilation en evacuate people and pets.
• Turn the heat, ventilation and air conditioning off to avoid circulation of polluted air.
• Collect the broken pieces with a cardboard or stiff paper and use tape to stick all small pieces and dust left on the floor.
• Clean the floor with a wet towel or wet wipes.
• Try to avoid using a vacuum cleaner but if you do, ventilate the room afterwards and discard the bag.
• Discard all bulb debris and cleanup materials in a sealed plastic bag or a glass jar with metal lid.
• Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water and continue ventilating the room.

If we act properly there is no risk. Follow the steps to clean everything thoroughly and discard anything that has been in contact with the polluted material.

Fluorescent lamps can be used in many of our decorative lamps and we believe it is important that our users know about their polluting aspects.
